Supplies for Botanical Sketching

On this page is a list of the supplies Anna uses for Botanical Sketching. These are shown in this Explainer video.

Below is a list of what Anna's using.

As Anna explains, you can use whatever supplies you already have for Botanical Sketching. If you decide to add anything to your kit, you'll also find buying links below.

Heads up - some of these links are 'affiliate' links which means that although the price you pay stays the same, we may earn a small referral fee which helps us to keep developing new content all the time. We only recommend supplies Anna actually uses - or the nearest equivalent we can find on other shipping zones.

(Please note that currently we only have links for ordering from the US and UK. The UK retailers links to here do ship worldwide. Links for ordering from AU and CA will be added soon).

Sketchbook

A hard cover, stitch bound sketchbook. Anna's favourite is the Zeta series by Stilman and Birn at 5.5" x 8.5". This has a thick paper at 270gsm.

Another option you could consider is the Watercolour Notebook by Moleskine. Anna likes this too, although the paper is less thick at 200gsm so some marks may show through to the other side.

Brushes

As well as the three largest brush sizes from the Anna Mason set, Anna uses a 2/0 mop brush. Any small mop brush will work. The one Anna uses is a 2/0 from the Series 304 Pointed Golden Synthetic set by Rosemary & Co. You could get away with just a 00 if you just wanted to buy one.

Paint

Anna's been enjoying painting with a limited palette of 6 colours for much of her Botanical Sketching.

Anna sometimes uses a black paint when she's working in monochrome. Either Mars Black or Lamp Black artists watercolour paint by Winsor and Newton are good choices. Any black would work or you could mix Paynes Gray and Burnt Sienna.

Travel Palette

A tin palette which opens out is ideal for taking outdoors. Anna has some which she's had for a while. She's also been enjoying using a small one made by Art Toolkit.

Pencil crayon

And Anna uses a wax based (NOT water-soluble) pencil crayon in Payne's Grey. The one she uses is Faber-Castell Polychromos Artists' Single Pencil - Colour 181 Payne's Grey but any wax-based black or grey pencil would work.

When she's working outdoors, Anna uses a little clip-on water pot with a screw top.

Drawing board

For working outdoors, Anna likes to use a lightweight drawing board she can rest on her lap. This is similar to what guest artist Shelly Perkins uses when she's painting 'en plein air'. Below are links to some similar options:
