Not seeing the colours and tones that Anna sees

Starting to see more of the different colours and tones is part of the learning process. The more painting you do, the more easily you'll perceive the different hues in a composition. Be kind to yourself and give your eyes and brain some practicing time for new neural paths to form!

Other tips if you're struggling include:

  • Stepping back - place your painting next to the reference photo and take a big step back (about 4-6 feet) and compare the hues and tones that you can see. By stepping back you can get a different perspective of your picture.
  • Turn your painting, and your reference photo upside down - this can allow you to see the subject afresh and to make it easier to break it down into a series of different shapes of colour. See Anna's blog about this here.
